On Monday 6th November 2023, Net Zero North East England hosted its annual summit – inviting more than 200 representatives from businesses, voluntary organisations, education providers and public sector bodies to the event at Newcastle’s Crowne Plaza.
SmartCarbon joined the region’s sustainability community at the event designed to highlight progress made within the region over the last 12 months and highlight opportunities for improvement.
Net Zero North East England formally launched in November 2022 as a partnership to accelerate and celebrate the region’s transition to a greener and more sustainable future. The partnership includes the seven North East local authorities and two combined authorities.
As Heidi Mottram, co-chair of NZNEE, said:
“Achieving net zero is the biggest challenge facing the UK today, but for the North East it’s a tremendous opportunity, too.”
She continued:
“With our rich heritage in innovation, and prominence in sectors like renewable energy generation, automotive manufacturing, and the tech and digital space, there’s no better place to pave the way on net zero than the North East.”
In addition to a number of presentations delivered by the likes of Mary Agaraki – who will be one of the trainers delivering our own Carbon Accounting course in partnership with Northumbria University – there were a number of workshop sessions held over the course of the day.
The SmartCarbon team were invited to exhibit and attend the afternoon’s networking event alongside other members of the sustainability community. We were delighted with the interest shown in our SmartCarbon Calculator and, in particular, the capabilities we are able to offer in relation to supply chain reporting.
Speaking after the event, SmartCarbon Commercial Director, Lee Jackson said:
“Events like the Net Zero North East England Summit are important in raising awareness of the stark realities of the climate emergency and identifying some of the vital steps that organisations are taking to get themselves moving towards net zero.
