Building a Reporting Ecosystem

How SmartCarbon strengthened Scope 3 reporting for Newcastle City Council

Newcastle City Council sought to expand their understanding of Scope 3 emissions, building on existing Scope 1 & 2 reporting. Facing challenges in measuring indirect emissions, the Council needed a way to reliably capture supplier data and gain a full picture of their upstream and downstream carbon impacts. Through SmartCarbon’s growing regional ecosystem, the Council was able to engage local partners, including the NHS Trust, to improve their Scope 3 reporting.

What we did

SmartCarbon provided consultancy to map and measure Scope 3 emissions and configured our platform to align with the Council’s reporting requirements. We also helped establish a scalable process for engaging suppliers and internal teams, ensuring the Council could continue reporting independently in the future.

COMPREHENSIVE REPORTING

All relevant Scope 3 categories were captured (11 of 15 sub-categories), giving the Council a full view of upstream and downstream impacts.

Improved Data Engagement

Working with suppliers and local partners created a more reliable and complete data set for the Scope 3 assessment.

Empowered Teams

Newcastle City Council now has standalone expertise to continue reporting under its own steam and use insights to guide decarbonisation planning.

Boosted capacity and confidence

The Council can now confidently report on its full Scope 3 footprint, informing strategy and stakeholder discussions. Through collaboration with SmartCarbon, they have built a sustainable process to engage suppliers and track carbon impact across the wider ecosystem.

“SmartCarbon helped us not only measure our Scope 3 emissions but also build a process that empowers us to report independently. By collaborating with local partners, we now have the insights and confidence to plan our decarbonisation journey.”
